Drug interventions staged properly work well. The purpose of an intervention is twofold; the first part is to get the family members and loved ones on the same page and in agreement that the addict is going to drug treatment. The second part is to get the addict to agree to go to drug rehab.
There is a myth regarding recovery, it is “if the addict does not want help, drug rehab will not work.” No one wants to be an addict and by time a drug intervention is staged the “party” is over, it is all misery by that point. In a family intervention one of the family goals is to raise the addict’s bottom. For the most part addicts cannot do this for themselves. Addicts continue to lower their bottom and in the worst case their bottom is death.

The television series Intervention on A&E has done a lot to educate people on both the horror of addiction and how to stage a proper drug intervention; the show is true to life. Having a professional Drug Interventionist on site is not necessary for success in a drug intervention but the chances of success do go up dramatically.
One of the roles of a professional Drug Interventionist is to keep the emotions in check during the drug intervention. In a family intervention the family is intervening on the addict and the interventoin is full of unavoidable raw emotion.

It is imperative that the drug rehabilitation program be selected and admission arrangements are made with the drug rehab before the intervention is staged. When the addict does agree to go to the drug treatment program the family has to be prepared to take him or her directly to drug rehab at conclusion of the intervention.
